The most significant sector in the Indian car market is the small car sector. One another new car in this category has been added by the Maruti Suzuki India. After the giant success of Alto and Alto K10, the company has launched new avatar of Alto, dubbed as ‘Alto 800’. Now, the Alto F8D has been replaced by Alto 800, which is cheaper than Alto K10 and pricey in comparison to the Alto F8D. It seems that the company doesn't wish to mislay any customer and it has broadened the selection for Alto lovers with much enhanced design and feature packed car. The Alto 800 takes heavy design idea from different cars and based on the existing Alto platform, however it has more interior room. This new car is certainly going to transform the entry-level hatchback sector, and contains all the features to go straight in the top 10 bestseller vehicle's list.
The Alto 800 is offered in 3 standard variants - Alto 800 Base, Alto 800 LX and Alto 800 LXi and 3 CNG variants - Alto 800 CNG Base, Alto 800 CNG LX and Alto 800 CNG LXi, with the prices beginning from INR 2.44 lakhs (ex-showroom price in New Delhi) for the base model. Even before the company declared the prices, Maruti Suzuki India got around 10,000+ bookings for the Alto 800. It is available in 6 different eye-catching colors including New Blazing Red, New Frost Blue, New Torque Blue, New Granite Grey, Silky Silver and Superior White. The car is now shorter in its overall length, 3395mm in place of 3495mm as on the previous model, although is wider (1490mm against 1475mm) and also stands taller (1475mm against 1460mm) on its 12-inch tubeless tyres.
The mileage figure offered by the car for standard variant is 22.74kmpl and 30.46kmpl for CNG ones. When coming to the engine, there is not so much variation among the engine performance of the previous models and new Alto 800. But, Maruti claims to have advanced the peak power and torque to 48 PS at 6000 rpm and 69 Nm at 3500 rpm, respectively. The car seems more stable on high speeds while driving on the city roads, whereas at the same time being more responsive to the stifle. The company has set up all new Cable type gear shift mechanism for smooth gear shifting with Diagonal shift assist, Detent pin technology, and Flat torque to evade many shifting. The Alto 800 has to face tough completion in the small car market with Hyundai Santro & Eon, Tata Motors Nano, and Chevrolet Spark, from General Motors.
The interiors are a welcome transform over the earlier generation Alto. As a step up the ladder for somebody who is graduating up from an 800, they do appear modern and practical. When compared to the older cars, the plastic quality and even the fit and finish of the interiors are superior this time. The car consists of a new 3-spoke steering wheel and an instrument binnacle too. The new instrument panel appears improved; however it could have been much enhanced. The flowing central console is refined in a shade of silver and sports the manual air-con system. As well, the front passengers acquire glass holders and there is usable space over the glove box. The execution of a range of new elements inside is fine, although Eon has better and more comfy seats, plus the quality of the plastics and the bells and whistles are good here.
When coming to exteriors, the new Alto 800's harmonious yet slick design packs rather a thump with an exclusive "Wavefront" design. The thing which makes the car design look wonderful includes the prominent wheel arch, the smooth long curves, and wider lip adds to the side posture. The outside black rear view mirrors are adjustable manually. The front view of the car consists of a charming ‘V’ stretching from the view mirror up to the nose, plus a Suzuki sign on the silver chrome strip on the grille. The headlamps are broad to the sides and sharp towards the inside, providing an attractive ninja glance, and the big hexagonal grille and the air-dams provide superb look to Alto 800 in comparison to the older generation Alto.
On the safety side, the car finally acquires the option of an airbag (just driver side). Alto 800 utilizes high strength steel that gives better occupant protection. ABS is yet not accessible on the Alto, but its addition in the option pack would have been a responsible move and a benchmark for others to pursue. The car doesn’t set any other benchmarks, however manages to take an already well-known product to its next level.
Maruti Suzuki Alto has been the bestselling car in the country in spite of being dated in terms of design. The belief in the Maruti Suzuki brand has made things trouble-free for them. Just as the sales of the Alto saw a dip, the company did a makeover to the present Alto chassis and introduced the Alto 800. The new Alto 800 is certainly a better-refreshed car over the Alto 800 and the quality is better also; so this new car is good refreshment over the old Alto. The Alto 800 brings to the table a low price of ownership; a well-built service network and the much required alternative of CNG propulsion, which will assist it, uphold the lead over its opponents. On the other hand, there are superior looking and come packed with more brownies in the market, so it is recommended to still consider these alternatives if you wish something more stylish.
